The Dominican Republic is the Caribbean's golf capital — and the world's most concentrated destination for championship golf course design. Within 90 minutes of Punta Cana International Airport: Punta Espada and Las Iguanas (Jack Nicklaus, Cap Cana), Corales and La Cana (Tom Fazio and Pete Dye, Puntacana Resort), and Teeth of the Dog, Dye Fore, and The Links (Pete Dye, Casa de Campo). Villa Espada at Cap Cana — on Punta Espada Fairway 5 — is the Dominican Republic's finest private golf villa.

Why the Dominican Republic Leads the Caribbean in Golf

More top-ranked golf courses per square mile than any other Caribbean nation. Three separate private resort communities — each with multiple world-class courses — accessible within 90 minutes of the same international airport. Year-round playing season. A private villa market built specifically around the on-fairway full-service model. No other island in the Caribbean combines these factors at the Dominican Republic's level.

The story is partly geographic — the northeast coast of the DR has a stretch of oceanside topography ideal for championship course design — and partly the result of sustained investment by world-class developers who attracted the best golf architects in the world over a 50-year period. Pete Dye at Casa de Campo in the 1970s, Jack Nicklaus at Cap Cana in the 2000s, Tom Fazio at Puntacana Resort in the 2000s. The cumulative result is a golf destination that rivals anything in the world.

And unlike Scotland or Ireland — both phenomenal destinations with weather you can't predict — the Dominican Republic offers golf travel certainty. Book November through April, you will play in 80°F trade-wind conditions with firm fairways and fast greens every time. The weather is as much a part of the product as the courses.

The Dominican Republic's Golf Courses — The Full Lineup

Punta Espada Golf Club — Cap Cana

Jack Nicklaus Signature design, opened 2006. Eighteen holes, par 72. Ranked #1 in Latin America and the Caribbean by GolfWeek consistently since opening. Nine holes play along the Caribbean Sea, including a stretch from holes 11 through 14 that delivers sustained oceanside golf as dramatic as any course in the Americas. Host of the PGA Champions Tour Cap Cana Championship. Villa Espada sits on Fairway 5. Member access included in the villa stay.

Las Iguanas Golf Club — Cap Cana

Jack Nicklaus Signature design, opened November 2025. The second world-class course at Cap Cana incorporates a protected iguana nature reserve, cave systems, wetland habitats, and three consecutive oceanside holes at numbers 12, 13, and 14. The par-three 13th over open sea is already drawing attention from golf writers as one of the most dramatic short holes in the Caribbean. Member access included in the Villa Espada stay. Playing Las Iguanas in 2026 is playing a brand-new Nicklaus Signature design in its opening season.

Corales Golf Club — Puntacana Resort

Tom Fazio design, opened 2010. Host of the PGA Tour Corales Puntacana Championship. 18 holes finishing on the "Devil's Elbow" — three closing holes along the rocky Caribbean coastline that consistently rank among the most memorable finishing stretches in resort golf. Located 45 minutes from Cap Cana by private transfer. The villa butler can arrange day trips to Corales as part of a broader Dominican Republic golf itinerary.

La Cana Golf Club — Puntacana Resort

Pete Dye design, 27 holes in three 9-hole combinations (Tortuga, Arrecife, Hacienda). Fourteen of the 27 holes have ocean views across the Caribbean. 45 minutes from Cap Cana. An excellent complement to the Cap Cana courses for groups spending a week in the DR and wanting variety across their rounds.

Teeth of the Dog — Casa de Campo

Pete Dye design, opened 1971 and immediately recognised as the finest course in the Caribbean. Seven holes directly on the Caribbean Sea, routing the player around the rocky southern coastline of the Dominican Republic. Casa de Campo is 90 minutes from Cap Cana by private ground transfer, making Teeth of the Dog a day-trip destination for Villa Espada guests. Golf Digest has ranked Teeth of the Dog the best golf course in the Caribbean for decades. Playing it is a bucket-list item for every serious golfer.

Dye Fore — Casa de Campo

Pete Dye design, 27 holes. Set on cliffs above the Chavón River with ocean views visible from most holes. The combination of elevation change, river views, and Caribbean Sea backdrop makes Dye Fore one of the most visually distinctive courses in the Americas. Also accessible as a day trip from Cap Cana.

The Links — Casa de Campo

Pete Dye's links-style design at Casa de Campo — firm, fast, wind-driven — is the only course in the Caribbean that approximates the playing conditions of a British links. 18 holes, inland routing. A change of pace from the oceanside courses for golfers who want variety.

Dominican Republic Golf Villa Destinations

Cap Cana — The Premier Golf Villa Destination

Cap Cana is the best base for a Dominican Republic golf villa trip. The private gated resort contains two Jack Nicklaus courses (Punta Espada and Las Iguanas), an 800-slip marina, Juanillo Beach, a waterpark, the St. Regis Cap Cana hotel, and Villa Espada — the only on-fairway private villa on the Punta Espada course. 20 minutes from Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ), making it the most accessible world-class golf destination in the Caribbean from U.S. cities. The villa butler can arrange day trips to Puntacana Resort and Casa de Campo, giving a Cap Cana-based group access to all five primary DR course clusters from a single base.

Casa de Campo — The Legacy Destination

Casa de Campo is the original Dominican Republic luxury golf community, established in the 1970s around Pete Dye's course designs. It operates as a private residential resort on the southern coast with three courses, a polo school, a marina, and a village of restaurants and shops. Private villa rental accommodation is available within the resort community, though the on-fairway villa model at Cap Cana is more developed. Airport access is via La Romana International Airport (LRM, 10 minutes) or Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ, 90 minutes). Groups who want to focus specifically on Dye courses should consider Casa de Campo; groups wanting the best overall golf villa experience should choose Cap Cana.

Puntacana Resort

Puntacana Resort sits adjacent to Punta Cana International Airport on the northeastern coast and contains the Corales and La Cana courses. It operates primarily as a beach resort with golf rather than a golf destination with beach access — the inverse of Cap Cana's proposition. Suitable for groups whose primary interest is the beach with occasional rounds of golf. For serious golf groups focused on world-class course play in a private villa, Cap Cana is the superior choice.

Villa Espada — The Dominican Republic's Finest Golf Villa

Villa Espada at Cap Cana is the Dominican Republic's — and the world's — most complete private golf villa. Eight bedrooms accommodating up to 22 guests, positioned directly on Punta Espada Fairway 5, inside the Cap Cana private gated resort. Private chef managing all meals daily. Personal butler coordinating all logistics: tee times at Punta Espada and Las Iguanas at owner rates, airport transfers from PUJ for all guests, day trip arrangements to Corales, La Cana, and Teeth of the Dog, and any other requests from arrival to departure. Two six-person golf carts fuelled and ready in the garage, connecting directly to the Punta Espada cart path.

Rates from $2,500/night (May–October) to $4,500/night (November–April). All rates include full private staff, golf carts, and private airport transfers. Green fees billed at owner/member rates separately. 18% Dominican Republic government tax applies.

How to Get to the Dominican Republic for Golf

Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ) is the main entry point for Cap Cana, Puntacana Resort, and the northeast DR. It receives direct flights from virtually every major U.S. city, most Canadian cities, and seasonally from UK and European hubs. It is consistently one of the busiest international airports in the Caribbean in terms of U.S. tourist arrivals. Flight times: Miami (2 hrs), Atlanta (3 hrs), New York JFK/EWR (3.5 hrs), Houston IAH (3.5 hrs), Dallas DFW (4 hrs), Chicago ORD (4.5 hrs), Toronto YYZ (3.5 hrs), London LHR (9.5 hrs).

For Casa de Campo groups, La Romana International Airport (LRM) is 10 minutes from the resort — but it has limited U.S. service. Most groups flying into Casa de Campo still land at PUJ and transfer 90 minutes by private vehicle.

Shipping golf clubs. Most U.S. airlines allow golf bags as checked luggage for a standard or flat fee. Confirm with your airline before travel. The villa butler can also assist with arrangements for club rental at Punta Espada and Las Iguanas for guests who prefer not to travel with clubs.

Punta Espada Golf Club at Cap Cana is consistently ranked the best resort course in Latin America and the Caribbean by GolfWeek Magazine. It is a Jack Nicklaus Signature design with nine holes along the Caribbean Sea. Teeth of the Dog at Casa de Campo (Pete Dye, 1971) is ranked the best course in the Caribbean by Golf Digest, making it the leading historic course in the DR. Villa Espada guests receive member access to Punta Espada and the new Las Iguanas course, and the butler can arrange day trips to Teeth of the Dog.

Cap Cana is a privately gated resort community with 24-hour security and a self-contained resort infrastructure. Guests who arrive by private transfer and stay within the resort — the standard Villa Espada experience — do not encounter the concerns sometimes associated with public areas of the Dominican Republic. The resort is a residential address for a significant number of international families and is maintained to international luxury standards.

Golf is playable year-round in the Dominican Republic. Peak season is November through April — dry, warm, 78–85°F, firm fairways. Low season (May–October) is warmer and more humid with some tropical weather risk in August–September. Most serious golf groups target November through March for optimal conditions.

No. U.S., Canadian, UK, and EU citizens do not require a visa for stays under 30 days in the Dominican Republic. A valid passport and a tourist card (included in most airline tickets or purchasable on arrival) are required.

The Dominican peso (DOP) is the official currency, but within Cap Cana and the major resort communities, U.S. dollars are accepted universally. Villa Espada billing is in U.S. dollars. Green fees and resort purchases are typically priced and payable in USD.
